Picardo’s Bamboo Grove

The bamboo grove was planted by Picardo gardeners in 2012 with the purpose of providing a source of pole and trellis materials for gardeners.

If you have any special requests for certain sizes, fresh cut stems suitable for bending, or curved bamboo, please email Bill at loeberbill@gmail.com.

If you’d like to be a part of the Bamboo Stewardship Team, here is what we do:

  • Maintain safe passage on garden access trail through the Grove from 25th Ave. NE.

  • Initiate practices that contain the running bamboo from spreading outside the present footprint.

  • Utilize practices that produce a sustainable crop of bamboo for gardeners use.

  • Strategize the best access system with the lowest impact on existing, healthy bamboo stems.

  • Maintain safe conditions within the Grove.

  • Refrain from indiscriminate, unsafe cutting of bamboo such as illustrated in these pictures taken recently in the Grove:

Two Kinds of Bamboo

Eleven species were planted and can be differentiated into two groups: clumping bamboo and running bamboo.

  • Clumping Bamboo decisions are minor, day-to-day tasks like organizing a cleanup or replacing tools. These are typically handled by individual gardeners or small groups without formal review.

  • Running Bamboo projects involve activities that require more coordination, like planning work parties or setting potluck dates. While these projects don't require formal proposals, they often involve collaboration with site leaders or the Community Advisory Team.
